Which casting reel should you choose?

Rod balance

Choose a reel suited to your rod — meaning a reel that will balance the rod, but also one that will allow you to cast the lures intended for the rod's power rating.

The bearings

For a casting reel, the crucial point is the spool's rotation capacity. The smoother the rotation and the lower the resistance to rotation, the farther you can cast and with lighter lure weights. It is therefore important to look carefully at the number and quality of the bearings in the reel.

The ratio

Another important point is the retrieve ratio. A standard ratio is 75–80 cm of retrieve per handle turn. You will therefore need to choose your reel's ratio based on the fishing techniques you wish to use.
